Match Trivia

A memorable game, mainly for the stubborn quality of the defence on both sides. Often it was positively brilliant. On a heavy pitch, the task of the backs was as difficult as it was exacting. None eclipsed the standard of Ellis. His partner, Grant held his own against McPhail to inspire confidence. The Rangers pair, and especially Gray, went boldly out to intercept the wingers. On a comparison at half-back, Motherwell carried off the palm, but heroically as Blair played against Smith, none of the half-backs touched the standard of Simpson. The two big men of the match were Simpson and Ellis. No assistance could be derived from the ball. Short passes seemed to hang on the turf. Only forwards with the lifting power of McPhail and Stevenson could exploit the long pass properly, and not often enough. The drawn result correctly represented the merits of the teams. On crucial chances, Rangers’ ought to have scored twice. Each time the victim of error was Main. None too sound, the Rangers right-winger injured his left leg after three minutes, when tackled fairly by Ellis. He was partially lame afterwards. A big slice of luck for Motherwell occurred after about fifteen minutes, when a hard pass from Smith was blocked by Main on the ground in front of goal. His other opportunity to score cropped up ten minutes from time, when he was too slow in getting in the third of three successive shots by him. A slick low shot by Stevenson, following a free-kick when the second half had gone twenty minutes, was about the cutest thing in the forward play. Overall, allowing for fifteen minutes of repeated Motherwell advances towards the Rangers goal in the second half, the deadliest shooting occurred at McClory’s end, chiefly from Smith and McPhail. The goalkeeper was invincible. Once he had the presence of mind to fist clear with Smith on his top. Dawson also played a notable part in a struggle as hard as either team will get in the cup-ties, for which both sides seem well prepared. The rangers can still strengthen their right wing. Turnbull was cool and collected in all he did and was as effective as Ogilvie
