Match Trivia

You might find it hard to believe, but there was the possibility of Rangers losing a point – and that would have made you raise your eyebrows. The period of peril was following McGarry’s snappy goal, 25 minutes after the restart. That made the score 2-1 for Rangers, who had got their two in the first half, bit from Smith headers following Kinnear centres. When McGarry registered, Morton got their tails up in a manner of speaking. Apoint would have been great business, and they went after it. Because Rangers were no great shakes, another Morton goal was always on the horizon, and it was only when Kinnear rammed home a third goal two minutes from the end that Rangers could feel perfectly safe. It was not a good game by a long way. Morton would get some satisfaction from keeping the score down, for which they owed a lot to Crosskey, whose saving of Smith’s headers was one of the few bright features. But Rangers could not feel they had fully earned the bonus. There was not enough full steam ahead with them. The forward line was all jerky. There was little sweet cohesion about it at any time. At any moment, I expected to see Fiddes and Main change places, but no doubt there was a reason for adhering to the selected formation. A redeeming feature was the clever forcing play of Brown, who sent along many peachy passes to Kinnear. This was Brown as the real attacking half-back. Jenkins had his anxious moments, even if they were few. Most of them were created by Leckie, who carried a shot – a better shot than any Rangers forward had. But I am not forgetting Smith’s headwork, which was the medium always most likely to get goals for Rangers. Kennedy got along well enough at centre-half to relieve Morton of some of their worry. Collins and Leckie played well enough to give promise of better things to come. They were the one real wing on the field, even if not much came of it. And I would end by saying that Rangers will have to come on a whole lot for their next game with Hearts
