Match Trivia
Very nearly a penny a goal for the spectators who went in through the shilling gate at Ibrox. Rangers lost three of the ten, and that did not sound well for their defence, but their forwards served out a big supply of ointment which was soothing. The rapid scoring made the crowd. Rangers followers were delighted with the cantrips of Sam English, who whipped on five goals, leaving McPhail to get the other two. The game ran very much in favour of the Rangers, so much so that it was one-sided. But English kept the interest scoring with his fireworks. You never knew what he would do next. And, besides the Morton forwards, and Black in particular, took any chances going in such snappy style that you never knew what to expect at Dawsons end either. English began the deluge after 13 minutes. He got the pass from McPhail, ran through, and put the ball out of Wilsons reach with his left foot. Rangers were going strong, and eleven minutes later, English returned the compliment by passing to McPhail, who shot the second goal. Then came Mortons first goal. Cassidy sent the ball out to McCartney, who cut in to get it, and centred. The ball hung in the air in front of goal. Dawsons hands went up, but Black jumped simultaneously and got his head to it. There was something of a collision, and Dawson took a minute or two to come round. It was good anticipation on Balcks part. With the game going in Rangers favour, English scored twice more before the interval. His best goal and they were all smartly taken - was his fourth, then minutes after the restart. The ball came along from Nicholson, and English, running into position, showed what coolness and deftness of touch could do. He took the side of the foot and placed the ball in the net. Another peach of a goal was Blacks next. McCartney brought the ball in quickly, and Black made his shot on the turn. There was tremendous speed behind the shot and Dawson was helpless. But English wouldnt let Morton see daylight. He came long with his fifth goal and after Banks had scored following a free lock, McPhail finished the riot by scoring Rangers seventh with a thunderbolt. Although they won easily, Rangers did not entirely satisfy yet. There was a lack of all-round cohesion. The two best players in the ground were English and Black, with Wilson a grand goalkeeper he showed wonderful anticipation. Dawson was probably shaken by his injury, but I thought he might have saved the third goal. Gray and McAulay had not a great deal to do. Brown was in his right place. Meiklejohn had been more agile, and while McDonald placed well, he was not always strong in his tackling. Nicholson got across some very good balls and McPhail was mush better than when I saw him against Airdrieonians. English was an entertainment with both head and feet. He knew how to run into position for the pass and he was dead on the target. Marshall and Fleming played a good first half but were patchy afterwards. Apart from Wilson, the Morton defence was too sow. Ritchie has the makings of a right good half-back, only I would like to see him playing the ball a little to his centre and to the right. I liked Black, who will be all the better when he is speeded up a bit. He is game. McCartney could get the ball across well. Banks is young and will come on, but he needs experience
