Match Trivia
In spite of the unfavourable weather conditions there was a good crowd at Ibrox Park last night to witness the opening match of the season. Estimated attendance 5000, drawings (gate and stands) £194. The early exchanges were not up to the First League standards, but before many minutes had gone there were several samples of good forward play, in which the Rangers were prominent. Clever all-round play by the Rangers forwards left Smith in possession the ball, and after dodging Stewart, he scored, Robertson having no change of saving. Campbell looked like adding a second goal after an individual run, but Robertson rushed out and cleared. The visitors had several good tries for goal after this, but Newbigging cleared each time he was called upon without trouble. Speirs had a rare opportunity of equalising, by the shot the ball across the goalmouth and past. The home forwards played pretty but ineffective football close on halftime. Stewart and Thomson defended well, holding the Rangers front rank so well in check that Robertson was seldom tested. Speirs initiated a run close on halftime, and being well backed up, Newbigging was in difficulties. Dropping the ball his goal seemed at the mercy of Morton when Jackson cleared. Halftime – Rangers 1 goal: Morton 0. Early in the second half Kyle passed the ball to Smith, who crossed to Campbell, the last named just failing, and no more to convert. Lindsay and McCubbin tried hard to equalise, but they could not get through their opponents defence. The Rangers took up the attack again, but their work near goal lacked finish, Smith who had been comparatively idle this half sent the ball so accurately into goal that the first chance he received that Campbell scored. The visitors through McCubbin and Lindsay all but got the better of Newbigging immediately afterward, only clever saving by the goalkeeper preventing a score. Once more the goalkeeper had to save following some grand play by McCubbin. After grand rally by Morton, who had hard luck in not scoring, Campbell went off for goal and being hotly perused by Thomson and Stewart, he shot Robertson saving at the expense of a corner. A few minutes later Campbell again scored from a centre by McDonald. McCubbin and Kyle had splendid tries for goal, but the goalkeeper cleared in each case. In interesting game in which Rangers showed to much better advantage than their opponents ended – Rangers 3 goals: Morton 0
