Match Trivia
I was disappointed with Kilmarnock at Ibrox because I know they can do better and should have done better. As it was, they could have been beaten by a bigger margin without any injustice, and I am not thinking of the penalty kick, which seemed a harsh decision. In any case McDonald hit the bar from the spot, as no arm was done. Heavy going made control of the ball anything but easy, but the Rangers forwards came more near to mastering the conditions. They were quicker in going ahead, and though much of their passing was too close, they had far more driving force than the Kilmarnock line. Marshall and Craig for one thing could bring English into it, and that was exactly where Williamson and Muir failed with Maxwell. Scarcely ever was the Killie centre given a chance to make a quick thrust which is his strong suit. He was well watched by McDonald, who played a really fine defensive and forcing game, but I looked for the Rugby Park wing supports working openings more readily. Connell an Aitken got the ball across well at times, but they were not consistent. Milliken and Milloy were the real success in the beaten team, which will be a lot better when Smith returns to centre-half, as will be the case in their next match. Rangers made things more difficult for themselves than was necessary by trying to put so much work on the ball. Their best spell was during half-an-hour of the second half when the passing was fast and accurate and the shooting snappy, if sometimes a little off the mark. It was then that Milliken stood well by his side. One of his saves from an Archibald whizz-bang brought down the house. He saved grandly from Marshall and English. Meiklejohn and Brown were working close-up then, but the swinging of the ball might have paid better. The heavy ground was against Craig, but he did some good passes about. Smith held the ball more than he ought. It was not a severe test for the Rangers defence, yet they had some anxious moments, especially just at the start and near the end, when the Killie forwards kept the ball moving in more open fashion. Rangers took the lead after 20 minutes when Archibald with one of his low hard drives shot into the far corner of the net after Marshall and English hard worked the opening. Three minutes from the interval, Marshall got clear through following inside forward passing, and he placed the ball in the net with Milliken helpless. He should have done the same again a minute later when Archibald gave him the pass, but he didnt
