Match Trivia

The visit of Kilmarnock to Ibrox Park did not evoke much general interest, the 4000 spectators who were present being chiefly composed of the Rangers own devoted adherents and those who, though now located in the city, still take a warm interest in the doings of Kilmarnock. The game unfortunately, turned out to be very one-sided, Kilmarnock good team as they undoubtedly are, quite failing to make any show against the coming First League champions. With the exception of the opening fifteen minutes of the second half, Kilmarnock were really never in the hunt, and their defeat by 5 goals to 0 – big as it is – was the actual outcome of the disparity between the teams. The Rangers lacked the services of Crawford, Mitchell, Campbell, Miller and Smith, but the substitutes, Drummond, McCartney, Low, A Sharp and Wilkie got along in such wonderfully fine style that it is doubtful, supposing the usual League team had been playing, if the defeat of Kilmarnock would have been more pronounced. Kilmarnock had their usual eleven, and if any excuse can be trotted out for their heavy beating – apart from the ability of their opponents – it is that they were disporting themselves on a field strange to most members of the team, and were perhaps unduly impressed with the reputation and standing of the ‘Light Blues’. At anyrate the fact remains that they could not get into that state. The Rangers took the game in hand from the start, and McPherson soon beat the Kilmarnock custodian, who later was powerless to stop a couple of shots from Hamilton, while Busby in endeavouring to clear a centre by Sharp placed the ball through his own goal. With a lead of four goals the Rangers resumed play in a rather easy sort of fashion, but fast and determined work by the visitors soon made them put their beast foot foremost. But the defence of the Rangers never wavered, and the fury of the Kilmarnock’s onset gradually dying away the play again waged near the Kilmarnock goal. But the defence of Kilmarnock proved very stubborn, and the Rangers could add only one goal to their total, and it was the result of a long kick by Drummond. Despite Mitchell’s absence the Rangers half-back line was particularly powerful, Gibson and Neil being well nigh impassable. McCartney came through his trial with credit. Dickie, Smith and Drummond were easily able to account for all that came their way, and Kilmarnock will not readily forget the skill and solidity which they were called upon to face. Hamilton and McPherson were in very dangerous form at goal, and the cool and accurate passing of Low, Sharp and Wilkie worked havoc and Kilmarnock defence. Craig Showed fair form in goal for Kilmarnock, and Busby and Brown though often outwitted, tackled and returned with commendable alacrity and judgment. The half-back line had a very hard task set them, and it must be said that the cute and frisky Rangers took a deal of liberties with them. Anderson was perhaps the most effective, but the trio were outclassed. Among the forwards Findlay and Campbell were most conspicuous.
