Match Trivia

The final tie in the Competition for the Scottish Cup was played on Hampden Park before an attendance, which greatly exceeded expectations. The weather was dry, and the ground in fine condition, but there was a bitterly cold northeasterly breeze, which greatly interfered with the play. The sum drawn at the gates was £642, and the stands £104 – a total of £746, which would have been greatly increased had the weather been more favourable. This under the circumstances must be regarded as one of the best gates drawn in the competition, as it was never anticipated that with a Second League club in the final the drawings would reach anything like this figure. The county men won the toss, and sharp on time Hamilton started for the Ibrox eleven against a slanting breeze. The Rangers front rank got in at the start, but the attack was loose, and Campbell, Reid and Findlay got well past Smith, only however to finish weakly. A timely pass of Hamilton’s at the other end let Miller away, and Smith headed through from the cross shot, but Brown had previously been penalised for upsetting Miller, and the point went for nothing. McAllan saved from the free kick, and Kilmarnock went to the other end, unsteadiness spoiling them in front of Dickie. McPherson and Miller dallied too much, and consequently made little progress towards McAllan. Campbell nicely beat Mitchell, but Gibson intercepted the rush, and a free kick helped the provincials. Nothing came of it, however and play ruled had and fairly even. First Gibson and then Smith conceded corners to the provincials. But the first was sent behind, and Dickie kicked away from the second. The county forwards came back with the aid of a free kick, but Smith and Drummond were safe, and the men were far too eager to score. The Killie forwards took some stopping, and with the wind were playing a hard, if unprofitable game. At halftime there was no scoring. Kilmarnock resumed against the wind, and at once McAllan had enough to do to get away a fine try of A Smith, and then after a fine run by Findlay and Reid, Muir shot over. Hyslop was brought up for over-zeal, but nothing came of the free kick, and as little against Campbell for similar work, the ball going behind. Hyslop, who was lame, exchanged places with Miller, but the changes worked no wonders. Gibson was pulled up for attention to Findlay, and from the free kick one of the Light Blues gave his own colleague a nasty shot to clear. Twenty-four minutes from the resumption A Smith opened the scoring for Ibrox with a fine shot, amidst loud cheers. The Rangers forwards were now a little like themselves, and J McPherson had a grand try, which just grazed the bar. Four minutes from the scoring the first point Hamilton ran clear through the Kilmarnock defence, and raised the Ibrox total to two, almost raining the record to three a minute later. Until the close the Light Blues pressed, but could not score. Miller hit the post, and A Smith shot past, and nothing subsequently of any accuracy troubled McAllan. It was not a great final by any means, but Kilmarnock made all over a first-rate display, and to lose by only two goals against the best scoring team in Scotland speaks well for them. The result was – Rangers 2 goals: Kilmarnock.
