Match Trivia
Good Generals, like good hostesses, always make their plans in advance. Killies plans were obvious and clever. So clever they kept Rangers guessing for more than half the match, but so obvious that Rangers gradually saw through them. The tactics were these Drysdale had to trail Venters; Harvie had to do likewise to Thornton and the famous all-conquering Light Blues would be bottled up. And, as I say, they were successful up to a point. Up to the point when Jamie Smith decided to prove that not for nothing did, he cut his baby teeth on the toe of a football boot. With Smith playing better than his best, all Killies pre-conceived ideas collapsed like a pack of cards. Strange thing about this game was that both sides played much better against the wind. Rangers had it in their favour the first half but could make nothing of Killies defence. All their attacks seemed to have a platonic touch about them you know nothing serious. Turning round all square, and now with the gale behind them, Kilmarnock had a chance of creating a sensation. At least so we thought. Soon these notions were blown sky-high. Smith galloped up to the right. Bell decided his goal was scheduled as an evacuation area. Over came the ball to McNee, who prodded home with the greatest of ease. No 2 quickly followed. McNee this time made the running. He meant to shoot, but the ball swerved to Waddell. In a jiffy it was back up the middle again. Smith came hurtling through and Bell might as well have been hanging on the neatest church steeple for all the chance he had. Rangers third had a touch of fluke about it. Waddells corner kick was held by Bell, bust as the keeper swing round to avoid Smith the ball eluded his grasp and rolled over the line. Killie did try hard to put a better face on things bit no, it was just one of these days when nothing would go right with them. For instance, Gallacher screwed one outside the post when it looked ten times easier to score. Smith again decided to show how easy goalscoring was. This time he actually dribbled past Bell in the process. As a belated reward for a plucky, though luckless display Collins managed to head one past Jenkins in the last minute. So, Rangers carry on, shaping like real champions indeed. You succeed in blanketing out their two most dangerous forwards, and low and behold the other three come along and serve up the devastating stuf
