Match Trivia
Rangers won the match at Ibrox, and lost Bell and Charles Duncan injured before the interval. Two points can scarcely equal in value two forwards who may have to miss the Glasgow Cup tie with Celtic next Saturday. It was a peculiar match. Rangers were two goals in hand within eight minutes after the start. Scott Duncan, after five minutes, was tearing through with the ball at his feet when Mitchell called him to the halt, and from the penalty kick the Rangers flying winger scored. Then Lawson, the Shettleston boy, put over a nice centre for Charles Duncan to score a second goal three minutes after the first. It was only then that Kilmarnock started to play. So well did the forwards that the ball ahead that the Ibrox halfs were chasing them for a long time. But, unfortunately for Kilmarnock, there was scarcely a shot in their locker. At the same time it seemed to me that Culley was not too leniently treated by Logan. Bell limped off with a muscle injury, and then, after all Kilmarnock open-field play, Scott Duncan ran through and scored a third goal, while his centre was lying prostrate with a bad bruise behind an ear after contact with an opponent’s head. The Kilmarnock defenders made only a half-hearted attempt to check the Rangers’ right-winger, evidently believing that play should stop on account of his namesake’s mishap. Except for their poor finishing, Kilmarnock, when going well in the first half, were almost as impressive in a general way as Rangers, but the thrustfulness of the home forwards was sufficient to ensure a victory even if they hadn’t got their dramatic early goals. Blair made an auspicious reappearance for Rangers, the half-backs were not impressive, but the forwards played clever swinging football when they were a full company. Lawson made an excellent opening. Kilmarnock’s young outside-right Armstrong, played a splendid first half, and then seemed to tire. This same Kilmarnock side ought to beat more then will beat them – if they don’t forget the powder and shot
