Match Trivia

Two goals in the first six minutes staggered Rangers, and at same time gave Kilmarnock confidence which they maintained throughout the game. The Rugby Park boys deserve great credit for the manner in which they worked against their more fancied opponents, and that too on Ibrox Park, which has never been a happy hunting ground for them. Rangers were weak in front, where the wingers failed to get the ball quickly enough into the centre. What is more, they did not carry a shot in their locker. The only shot of any moment came from Venters, and it was a scorer – the best goal of the match. Rangers’ half-backs, however, were not too kind to their forwards, and with this lack of cohesion we saw little of the Rangers we are accustomed to see. I liked the refreshing manner in which Kilmarnock went about their work. They knew what they wanted to do, and they did it by the shortest route. In Williamson they had the smartest player afield. He spread play from wing to wing, and when within shooting range he was never slow to try his luck. Yes, Kilmarnock has struck top form. Kelvin, Smith and Kenmuir covered up well, yet never once lost touch with their colleagues in front. Leslie and Milloy cleared their lines like heroes, and when Ibrox pressure was at its height in the second half Miller did valiant work in goal. Qhile it was a black day for the Blues, they might easily have saved their home record in the second half when the score stood 2-1 against them. They managed to carry the ball up to Miller’s goal area, but they lacked the scheming to circumvent a sturdy defence. If they did find an opening, they were either too slow in shooting or nobody seemed inclined to risk a shot. Even a penalty lick – given after consultation with a linesman – was missed by Gillick. Rangers struck me as being too nervy. They reeled under the opening Kilmarnock avalanche. As time went on, and they still found themselves in arrears, they grew more desperate, and their own anxiety completely spoiled any hope they had of success. Still, I am not going to be too critical. Rangers, like any other team can strike a bad patch, and undoubtedly, they are in the toils at the moment. Don’t think I am detracting from Kilmarnock’s victory. Far from it – They worthily earned the points, and their team played stamped them as a side who will be hard to beat and placed them as serious challengers for the Cup. Forty-five seconds after the kick-off Killie were one up. Black was quick to take advantage of a weak clearance by the Ibrox defenders, and promptly whipped the ball past Dawson. About five minutes later more Ibrox indecision in the rear gave Williamson a chance, and he in turn wasted no time in placing the ball behind Dawson. Twice Rangers had the ball in the net, but offside was given in each case. Then away went Venters on the right. He cut in, beating man after man, and finished by shooting a great goal. After Rangers’ second-half pressure, Kilmarnock broke away and Keane, picking up a pass from the right, shot past Dawson. Rangers were granted a penalty, but Gillick shot past from the spot. Five minutes from time, he made amends with a goal, but by this time Kilmarnock had earned a memorable victory
