Match Trivia

It was difficulty that the play at Ibrox in this match could be followed except at intervals, when a dense fog which enveloped the ground cleared slightly. Kilmarnock’s opening play gave promise of success, but weakness in front of goal, which was in evidence from the very start, was never overcome, and Lock was seriously troubled throughout the game. Perhaps the absence of Gilchrist had something to do with the ineffectiveness of the Rugby Park attacking line, for although Cameron, a Troon youth who made his debut, displayed some cleverness when in possession of the ball, his passes were invariably short, and he lacked the pushfulness necessary to carry him through when a scoring chance presented itself. Still, that did not account for the misses made by Armour, Cunningham and Howie, who were all placed for scoring purpose, before the Rangers had given Rennie much cause for anxiety. When the Ibrox attacking line did get going they showed more precision in finishing, and Reid had a lovely long drive which the International custodian dealt with. He had no chance to save, however, when the Rangers got the only goal of the first half. Halley was at fault in allowing Smith to get away, and when the outside left rounded Kirkwood his centre was so accurately placed that Hogg had no difficulty in heading the ball into the net. Kilmarnock did a big share of the attacking work at the commencement of the second half, but all to no purpose, and when Rangers’ forwards again came into Rennie’s vicinity they shot with force and accuracy. Reid from a difficult angle let go a fast low drive which the Kilmarnock goalkeeper got his foot to, but the ball travelled over to Hogg, who netted with ease. A few minutes after the Ibrox centre got through by himself and scored a beautiful goal with a fast rising shot. Kilmarnock had an easy chance to score later on, but it was not accepted. With the inclusion of Yuille as support to Hogg, The Ibrox attacking division seems to have settled. The young Ashgill player is unselfish in his attention to the outside man, and he does not neglect the centre. Bennett was the cleverest of the five, but both Hogg and Smith were skilful in the extreme positions. Reid balanced the line nicely, and accepted most of his opportunities for individual effort. No half-back on the field was the equal of Gordon in general effectiveness, and if he found Templeton a shade too slippery to begin with he had the best of the deal later on. Chapman and Hendry in a lesser degree, did good work, and Law was the better of the backs. The little that Lock got to do was easily accomplished. Little fault could be found with the Kilmarnock defence, although Kirkwood was a trifle less reliable than usual. Rennie saved well. There was not much to choose between the half-backs, although Halley usually parted with the ball to greater advantage than the other two. The forwards failed completely in finishing, but made ground rapidly in the outfield. Howie was the best of the line, with Templeton showing flashes of brilliance. Cunningham seemed slower than usual in gathering the ball
