Match Trivia

Jimmy Gordon Benefit Match - It was indeed a tribute to the popularity of James E Gordon that, notwithstanding the March-like weather which prevailed last night, 15,954 admirers passed through the turn-stiles at Ibrox Park. The gate and stand drawings amounted to £740 13s, and when all ticket returns have been made a four figure amount should easily be realised. Apart from the game, which was one of two thirty-fives, a couple of interesting events were served up during the interval. The two miles flat handicap, in which George McCrae was the central figure, provided a close finish, the Banknock man just getting home by inches from Lindsay (Glengarnock) and Potter (Larkhall). That popular and clever little boxer, Jim Higgins, and his sparring partner, Tim Devaney, gave a delightful exhibition of the fistic art, the wiliness and elusiveness of Higgins, in particular, being much appreciated. Sir John Ure Primrose, in addressing the Press representatives at the interval, made reference to the irreparable loss sustained by the Rangers Club in the sad death of their manger, Mr W Wilton. “The directorate would have liked to postpone tonight’s event”, he said, “but the advanced state of the arrangement and their duty to the public reluctantly compelled them to abandon this idea.” As to the play, it was a most pleasing exhibition. It was, however, evident from the beginning that goal-scoring was not on the programme. Many gilt-edges chances were offered, but there were no takers until three minutes from the close, when Muirhead fastened on a cross from the right and flashed the ball past Campbell. Rangers, with a strong wind behind them in the opening half, were a shade the more aggressive lot, but they seldom got within shooting distance of Campbell, so well did his backs perform. The Select gave a clever, if not too serious display in the closing period. Alan Morton, although not feeling too fit, was exceptionally lively on the right, and sent across many accurate centres which might have been turned to advantage. Andy Wilson fired several volleys which missed by inches, and Morton brought out the saving abilities of Robb on several occasion. Both teams, it is hardly necessary to mention wore black bands on their arms as tribute to the Rangers’ late manager. It will be gratifying to the Hearts’ supporters to learn that Bob Mercer was one of the outstanding players on the field
