Match Trivia
What a glorious game! Hibs went down, but they went down with flying colours. The two teams played delightful football and Hibs were as good as Rangers until it came to finishing. The Ibrox front rank was great. Alan Morton was not missed. Lawson played a spanking game on the left and got across some lovely balls. At the outset Rangers et the pace, and Archibald was early prominent. Harper, however, was ready for the half-shot, half-centre. Later, Cunningham had a shot blocked. Cairns’ effort met the same fate, and Archibald knocked out McGinnigle, with a fierce one which looked like going home. Then we saw Hibs right in action. Dunn proved too much for Muirhead, but McCandless was wily enough to get the pass meant for Ritchie. But next minute Ritchie came out on top and middled a lovely ball. A corner was the result, but nothing more. Away went Rangers on the right. A corner. Cairns had a shot blocked, and Johnston sent narrowly past. Hereabout Henderson might have opened the scoring. He missed entirely a rebound from a free-kick. One moment McCandless was stopping Ritchie, the next Dornan was passing back to Harper. So, play swayed from end to end in quick clever fashion, with few stoppages. Once Henderson got in a great shot. Harper’s spreadeagles save was brilliant. Nothing doing from the corner. Jimmy McColl showed his cuteness by veering to the right, and slipping a ball to Walker, but two fruitless corners was all the movement yielded. Just on half-time Henderson lifted high over when close in after clever play by Cairns and Cunningham. If play was good in the first half, it was brilliant in the second. But 22 minutes had elapsed ere we got a count. Henderson, dashing in like a train on a hard cross by Archibald, scored a great goal. Harper was helpless. Earlier on in this half the Hibs keeper saved brilliantly at point-black from the centre, and he again effective a brilliant clearance with half-dozen on him. Before the goal, too, McColl staggered Robb with a piston-like shot, which Willie was fortunate to get round the post. We were making up our minds for a one-goal victory for Rangers, when Cunningham scored with less than a minute to go. Harper saved from Henderson, Cunningham caught the rebound, and found the net via Harper’s far-away post. Harper was brilliant, especially when he saved by springing cat-like at a first-timer by Henderson in the second half. Both backs were grand, and all three halfs would have been better had they been more careful with their placing. In front I liked Halligan and Walker best. McColl will do better. He wasn’t properly played to. All Rangers were in tip-top form, the rearranged middle line being a huge success. Archibald’s play was a distinct triumph
