Match Trivia

These teams met at Cathkin Park last night in the Inter-City League, the weather was fine, but a stiff breeze affected the play, there was a good attendance. Against a strong wind Rangers kicked off, and it was at once evident that the breeze was to be a considerable factor in the play. Callaghan and Atherton worked the ball towards Dickie, but the Ibrox defence did all that was necessary, and the attack was abortive. A minute later Hibernian were back at Crawford, but without result. Effective play by Graham and Hamilton transferred operations to the other end, where a high cross by McDougall was headed past Rennie by May. Offside however nullified the point. Rangers bustled the Hibs defence, and Hogg badly missed kicking allowed McDougall to get in on Rennie. Twice in succession the custodian cleared. An individual effort by McGuinness, who beat Crawford, relieved the play, but the outside right’s cross was badly mulled and Smith cleared. Pretty work by Hamilton allowed the Rangers quintets to get away. Well over on the right Graham sent in but the Hibs goalkeeper reached the ball away. McColl at the other end had a glorious opportunity; he beat Smith on the run, and shot weakly into Dickie’s hands. Callaghan put the ball into the net, but the point was disallowed. Play continued to be very equal until the end of the half, no scoring having taken place. Immediately on the restart Rangers pressed and a fruitless corner came their way. Callaghan beat Robertson and Dickie with two Hibs down on him had to fist away. Later he had to concede a corner, which was safely cleared by Stark. The Rangers forwards were persistence and for a considerable time they monopolised the game. Rennie brought off some remarkable saves, and his display was deservedly cheered by the spectators. At this period it was undoubtedly hard lines, coupled with the grand saving of the international goalkeeper, which prevented the Rangers opening the scoring. A breakaway by the Hibs right looked likely, but McGuinness shot ridiculously wide. Five minutes from time May beat Rennie with a swift shot, and close on time Callaghan equalised the game. On the Rangers side Smith, Robertson and Graham played well, while the best Hibs were Rennie and Callaghan. Result – Rangers 1 goal: Hibernian 1 goal. JR Hamilton missed a penalty
