Match Trivia

These clubs met on Kinning Park and notwithstanding counter attractions there were about 2000 spectators present. The game, which was only won by the Rangers in the last five minutes, was about as stiffly a contested match as could well be imagined. The score was – Rangers four goals, Hibernian three. From the kick off the fight was keen. The Rangers against a strong breeze followed well up and obtained a corner, which however resulted in no advantage. Then followed a sharp attack by the Hibernian and out of a series of tries they managed to register the first goal. This result was obtained about ten minutes after the start. In less than a minute the Rangers equalised matters after a severe fight in front of the uprights. Even play characterised the remainder of the first half and towards the close Mackie put on a second goal for the Rangers. Commencing the second portion the home players at once assumed the aggressive, and the Edinburgh goalkeeper had quite enough to do to save his charge. The ‘Hibs’ retaliated and after good passing a right wing man scored a clever goal. The Rangers for a few minutes after this were badly pressed, the Hibernian forwards playing up brilliantly. The ‘blues’ then hemmed in their opponents but their efforts at goal were without effect and by a bit of good play the Hibernian scored a third goal. They were however not allowed to retain this advantage as Pringle placed his club on an equal footing a minute later. It only wanted some ten minutes from call of time and the play continuing in favour of the home eleven Sommerville found an opening before the whistle sounded to add a fourth point for the Rangers. Both sides showed good play – McHardy and McIntyre being best at back for the Rangers, while McKenzie, Peacock and Pringle were the pick of the front division. The Edinburgh back defence was excellent; the three halfbacks checked numerous runs by the Rangers. In the front ranks good speed and passing was shown by the wingmen.
