Match Trivia
The Rangers are again the champions of the League! The Light Blues won well against the Hibs yesterday at Ibrox Park in the game that decided the honours of the tournament. Their two goals came so late in the game that many of their supporters were resigned to a repetition of the Cup-tie result. The deciding goal was left to the last minute. A great display of goalkeeping by Harper, and a ring of defiant challenge by defenders who covered each other in brilliant style, were marked features of a struggle that held one’s interest all the time. There was no dubiety which was the superior all-round team, for the Rangers monopolised the attacks in the first half when they had the wind a were still top dog against it. Yet the plucky Hibs, with their usual good fortune, coupled with fearlessness in defence, almost pulled off another surprise. Dunn snapped a goal after twenty-eight minutes, when McCandless failed to go into Ritchie at close quarters, and this advantage they held until about ten minutes from tine, when Meiklejohn equalised from a well-merited penalty kick. Corners in plenty were cleared by Harper until one from Alan Morton, with plenty of screw behind the ball, gave him no chance to play the ball free, high up to the side. Instead, it came off the goalkeeper to Cunningham, whose left foot shot in the goalmouth gave the goalie from Easter Road not the ghost of a chance. I was delighted with the extreme wingers, who are to appear at Wembley sporting a Scottish jersey. Archibald played to the top of his form with a vivacity and strength of swinging the ball into the goal area that should have been turned to profitable account by Henderson, who worked hard, as usual, with little to show for his energy. Morton too, was in top form. He exhibited brilliant control and dribbling and worked many a corner off both McGinnigle and Harper. The right back of Hibs was the best of the backs, but he was overworked. Cunningham was given a trail run in partnership with Morton, and the combination of the pair was excellent. Dunn and Ritchie proved the better Hibernian wing. ‘Darkie’ Walker was held by Meiklejohn almost every time they met, and Muirhead was the most active and successful of all the half-backs. The Hibs moved quicker down the field with fewer moved than their opponents. The younger Rangers – Reid – Craig – came off.
