Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox Park, before fully 12,000 spectators, and in boisterous weather. Winning the toss the Hibs played with a strong wind behind them, and were not long in forcing a pressure, which only the sterling play of the Rangers defence was able to withstand. Time and again by strong bustling play they made their way to Dickie, but their test efforts were futile, what between Dickie’s accurate saving and the good work put in by Neil and Robertson. Opening out their play somewhat the Hibs got well away, and from a neat pass McCartney scored. Even play followed, and both goals had narrow escapes, but up till halftime no further scoring took place and the teams crossed over with the Hibs leading by 1 to 0. Early in the second half the Rangers rushed off, and from a corner Hamilton equalised. The wind had now increased in violence and rain fell in torrents, but the players pegged on with undiminished ardour, the home team having easily the better of matters, and when Smith with a long high shot again beat McWattie the result seemed a foregone conclusion for the Rangers. The best efforts of the Hibs to get beyond midfield were fruitless against such a strong wind and in face of the splendid defence of the Rangers, and they were constantly kept on the defensive. Five minutes from the close Wilkie scored a third point for the Rangers, but scarcely had the manifestations of joy subsided when the Hibs front rank broke away, and Atherton with an easy shot beat Dickie who had run out of his goal to clear. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Hibs 2 goals. The money taken at the gates amounted to £290, which with £60 at the stands makes a total of £350
