Match Trivia

Both teams at Ibrox Stadium Glasgow, had several changes from last week. With Hamilton (Aberdeen) not fully fit, Rangers were unable to play the expected new right wing. Gillick, who used to lead the forwards in his junior days, played centre forward in place of the injures Smith. Hins introduced Padgett from Bradford at inside left. Rangers struck out on the right wing, and after some pleasing work between McPherson and Duncanson a corner came the Ibrox way. Then cleared. Hibs attacked, but Keane’s final delivery went roaring high over. Further pressure by Hibs caused a deal of concern to the Rangers’ defence. A neat dribble and a powerful drive from Cuthbertson brought out a glorious Jenkins save. Rangers struck back, and Duncanson rattled the upright, Johnstone following with a quick snap which severely tested Kerr. In the thirteenth minute McPherson swung over a ball and Gillick, at full stretch, headed the opening goal for Rangers. Cuthbertson was again prominent in the Hibs attack, and Jenkins was forced to make a full-length dive to saving from the inside right. Later Rangers’ goal had a couple of narrow escapes. Finnigan rammed in a shot which came back off the upright to Keane, where first-time return came rattling down from the cross-bar. After half an hour’s play Rangers went further ahead, McPherson took advantage of slack play by the Hibs’ defenders to shoot past Kerr from short range. Barely a minute later Cuthbertson caught on to a loose ball and after eluding his man drove in a powerful volley which Jenkins touched on its way to the net. From a flag-kick Gillick headed narrowly past. Then Rangers increased their lead. Gillick slipped to Marshall, who travelled on a few places before firing in a ball which went crashing from the upright to the back of the net. Twenty-five minutes after the interval Gillick smartly headed a fourth goal for Rangers. Two minutes from the finish McPherson scored a fifth goal for Rangers
