Match Trivia

The season at Ibrox was opened by a match between Rangers and Hibernian. The weather was too warm for football, and there was nothing like the attendance expected, there being only 3000 present. Both teams were very strong, the Hibs having a full turnout, while the Rangers left out Graham and induced Cameron, Hamilton playing inside left. For the first half-hour the game was all in favour of the Hibs, the few occasions on which the Rangers came into prominence being due more to mistakes on the part of the Hibs than ability on the part of the Rangers. The Hibs forwards were exceptionally clever, Handling and McCartney in particular being too good for the defence, but the shooting was wretched, and what shots Dickie had to deal with were very feeble. The last fifteen minutes, however were pretty much in favour of the Rangers, who got two pretty goals, the first by McPherson, after a characteristic run, and the second by Cameron, who neatly finished a clever bit of play in which he and Hamilton were the chief participants. Halftime found the Rangers leading by 2 goals to 0. The second half opened with a really grand run by Cameron who, going right through was only dispossessed in the goalmouth. Rennie saved well, threw in quick succession, the last shot from Campbell being brilliantly dealt with. The Rangers did pretty much as they liked with their opponents, paying tactics being discarded for ornamental play. A breakaway resulted in Atherton scoring, but the point was disallowed for offside, although it looked a good enough goal. Drummond tripped Handling inside the twelve yards line, and the Hibs centre scored from the resultant penalty. Another penalty five minutes later to the Rangers was well saved by Rennie. It was an even game in the closing stages, and there being no further scoring, the Rangers won by 2 goals to 1. In the order named Gibson, McPherson, Rennie, Harrower, Handling, McCartney and Cameron were the stars.
