Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park before 15,000 spectators. Hibernians having lost the toss, kicked off against a slight breeze and a strong sun. Rangers were soon on the spot, and from a free kick Drummond landed the ball in the net, but as it touched no one in its passage the point didn’t count. Rangers still kept the pressure on, and a fine shot by Miller was productive of a corner, which Raisbeck cleared. Play was fast and exciting, but the Hibs, could not make much progress. The Hibernian were playing a stubborn game. Led on by Martin, they made a raid on Dickie’s charge, which was nearly productive of the desired result, the ball striking the bar and going over. Both teams were playing a hard game. The Hibs defence was very sure, and together they defied all the attempts of the Rangers to score, Low and McFarlane had a bout which ended in favour of Low, but ere he could shoot Robertson got in and deprived him of the ball. Hamilton scored what appeared to be a legitimate goal, but he was given offside. Two minutes later Hamilton made no mistake, and from a pass by Miller he walked through with the ball, thus scoring the first goal for the Rangers. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: Hibernian 0. After the interval the Rangers had to face the wind and sun. The Hibernians were first to get away, and Martin gave Dickie a shot to negotiate, which he did to perfection. From a free kick the Rangers got withing shooting distance, but A Smith headed behind. Neither team could settle down to clever tricky play, as each was too smart for the other to allow of that class of work. Again Martin got away, but he was called up for tripping Mitchell. Weak passing by the Rangers forwards spoiled many chances. From a free kick Dougal fisted the ball past Dickie, but of course no count was made. Wild kicking was the order of the day. Neither team was steady: mistakes were many. A corner was neatly placed by A Smith and Miller headed into McCall hands, who conceded another corner in defence. Nothing came of it, however. Towards the close the Hibs, made an effort to get on equality but failed. Result – Rangers 1 goal: Hibs 0.
