Match Trivia

Having loss the toss the Hearts kicked off against the breeze. The Rangers at once got on the ball, and H McCreadie tried a shot, which Fairbairn kicked out. Reid intercepted it, however and the ball bounded behind. From the goal kick the Hearts left wing made some progress, and passed the ball to Baird. Baird tried an overhead shot, but Drummond was there and play was again transferred to the Hearts end of the field. A bout between Barker and Adams ended in the latter getting the ball away. Kerr had a chance from a pass by Reid, but the ball travelled too fast for him to catch, and it went into touch. A run by Amos and Walker brought relief to the Hearts, but ere Ellis tried a shot Mitchell cleared. The Rangers front rank came away in a body and McPherson with a long shot scored the first goal for the Rangers. Fairbairn was rather easily beat at this stage, as he might have cleared. The Hearts were certainly having the worst of the play, as they seldom got past midfield. Baird at half was playing very steadily for the Hearts. From one of his returns, Walker eassayed a run, and getting clear of the halves, he passed to Ellis, but again the Rangers backs were all there, and play was transferred to the Hearts end. The Hearts improved in their work, and for a time they gave the Rangers defence plenty of work. Gow and Drummond played a perfect game, and they were repeatedly cheered for their returns. Towards the close of the first period the Rangers again took up the running. Barker and McPherson put in some grand work. From a pass by Barker, Kerr tried a shot, which Fairbairn caught with difficulty. A corner for the Rangers followed, but it came to nothing. The whistle sounded shortly after. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: Hearts 0 goals. The game resumed, the Rangers now having to play against the breeze, but with the sun at their backs. The play at once became exciting. After a short attack by the Rangers, the Hearts came away in a body, and McLaren equalised inside five minutes with a swift shot which fairly beat Haddow. The Hearts kept up the pressure, and looked like increasing their score, but the defence of the Rangers was on the alert. Time after time either Gow or Drummond had to clear, while Haddow was also kept busy. At last the siege was raised, Barker and McPherson getting well away on the ball. A bout between Barker and Fairbairn ended in favour of the latter, who sent the ball well out. A free kick for the Rangers ten yards out looked rosy. A McCreadie took the kick and placed the ball in the net, but as the leather touched no one in its passage the point went for nothing. The Rangers were now in the mood, and after some severe pressure they forced Hogg to concede a corner. Kerr placed the ball right in front of goal. Fairbairn fisted it out, but H McCreadie was lying handy, and with a swift shot he scored the second goal for the Rangers. Play now became very fast, each goal being visited in turn, but no further scoring took place. Result Rangers 2 goals: Heart of Midlothian 1 goal.
