The idea behind the playing of so many reserves by the Hearts against the Rangers at Ibrox – was no doubt quite good, but as it happened, some of the young men found the occasion just a bit too big from them. Still the Hearts in the first half, played a fairly sound, even game, although the forwards seldom seemed capable of creating a hole in the Ibrox defence. Once however, Robb missed the ball, which rolled between his legs and was on the line, when Manderson kicked clear. It was not until five minutes from the interval that Cairns tapped the ball into the net from a fast centre by Archibald. All of the second half ran in favour of the Light Blues. After 17 minutes Meiklejohn, who played one of his best games, dribbled through and put the ball low across White’s frontage. Henderson was on the spot, and he managed to ram the leather past the custodian. Thirteen minutes later Cairns, profiting by weakness in the defence, went through to score the third goal. The custodian appealed to the referee for ‘hands’ but without success. In the height of the attack, which was sustained by the Ibrox forwards, Henderson rapped in some great shot, one of which struck the under part of the bar and came down. Rangers claimed a goal, but also without success. The winners all played well, while the best of the Hearts were Crossan, Wright and Welsh
