Match Trivia

In beautiful weather and on a very fast pitch the final tie was decided before fully 35,000 spectators. The Hearts kicked off and play for a short time was of an even character. Both sets of backs played well Drummond being the pick. Porteous was giving the pass on the right, but Drummond generally held him safe. The Hearts tried hard in open the scoring, but failed to find anything like an opening, although Dickie’s charge ran several narrow escapes. At the other end McWattie defended splendidly, and it was not until Mackie beat him, after he had saved, that the enthusiasm of the crowd was made manifest. The Hearts strove their utmost to get on level terms, but without result. From a good run and a centre by Smith, Hamilton scored, but he was given offside. Again he was given offside, but it was a matter of little consequence, as McWattie saved. Near halftime, Drummond hurt himself so severely that he had to leave the field. The game was stopped, and it was certainly hard on the Hearts, as but for Drummond’s accident they most likely would have scored. Halftime – Rangers 1 goal: Hearts 0. The Hearts forced the pace on resuming, the Rangers having to play to the end without their International back. So cutely did Fraser and Speedie, who fell back to Drummond’s place, defend, and so ably were they backed up by Dickie, and the halves that it was no wonder that the excited Hearts did not score. Thomson went forward and Baird back, but still thee was no improvement on the visitors attempts at goal. At last it looked as if they must equalise, but Hunter’s header sent the ball just over the bar. The Rangers plodding away in a very methodical fashion had several dangerous incursions on McWattie’s goal the Hearts being frequently called upon save. He was eventually beaten by Hamilton, who single-handed sped between the backs and easily scored. With 20 minutes yet to play, the Edinburgh men played with desperate energy, but all to no purpose thanks to the brilliant of the whole Rangers eleven. Time was sounded with the Glasgow team thoroughly merited winners. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Heart of Midlothian 0. The gate money amounted to £700 and the stand to £110. The Rangers and Hearts as the result of the three games, consequently divide £2650 between them
