Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox before 15,000 spectators. Hearts having lost the toss, Sharp kicked off to Baird, who in turn kicked back to Marshall. Mitchell intercepted the latter’s pass, and slipped the ball across to Low. Then was witnessed a beautiful piece of dribbling and passing, which culminated by Marshall conceding a corner for safety. Low took the kick, but Hogg intercepting the ball, headed out of danger. A rush by the Hearts looked dangerous, the backs of the home team allowing the visitors forwards too much scope. Dickie cutely stepped out, and saved cleverly. It was now the Rangers turn to press, Low in particular, playing with great effect. The visitors’ backs however were not to be caught napping, even by Turnbull who affected a splendid back-heel pass to A Smith who shot past. Although not so flushed in their movements, yet the strangers were playing a robust game, Hamilton receiving a good pass, rushed fearlessly on the Hearts defenders, and single-handed scored a splendid goal. From a fine bit of passing by the Rangers front rank Hamilton scored a second goal for the Rangers. At last the visitors left wing got a chance to shine, and Robertson letting drive the shot clean beat both backs and Dickie, but the ball striking the inside of the post rebounded into play. The Hearts were indeed having hard luck, but grand defence, especially by Drummond and Dickie, and a spice of luck saved the downfall of the home colours. Halftime – Rangers 2 goals: Hearts 0 goals. On resuming play the Rangers vanguard went off in pretty and telling style, completely nonplussing the visitors defence; Hamilton passed to Low, who was in a favourable position for a try at goal, but there was too much way on the ball, and it went harmlessly by. An anxious time fell to the supporters of the home club. Shots were rained in on Dickie, but he maintained his reputation by punting out in quite his best style. The Hearts were decidedly unlucky at goal; they had played for a point, and could not have been grudged one had it fallen to them. The Strangers were playing a bustling, wide passing game, which was in strong contrast to the short passing, finished work of their opponents. Taylor and Baird in quick succession lost good chances to reduce the leeway against them. Dickie and Drummond, working in rare harmony, repulse the impetuous rushes of the oozing forwards. Cheer after cheer greeted the Hearts as they sent in shot after shot towards the Rangers goal, which seemed doomed to fall. The attack was however beaten off, and a magnificent shot was sent in by A Smith towards Fairbairn, who was relieved to see the ball going past. Back again came the Hearts; so persistently sis they attack that they were granted two corners by the homesters to save their lines. In the closing minutes of the game Dickie by a great save kept his goal intact, even with Robertson rushing in on him. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Hearts 0 goals.
