Match Trivia

The undecided final tie at Celtic Park, Glasgow on Saturday was attended by fully 16,000 spectators, this comparatively poor turnout being surprising in view of the favourable weather conditions. The ground was in splendid order, and the wind was not great enough to give any decided advantage. The Hearts went off at a great pace, the inside forwards doing most of the leading work, and the Rangers defence were hard pressed. Drummond played magnificently against a very clever wing, but he put just a trifle too much force into his method, and Dalrymple suffered from his attention. After the opening burst play quieted considerably, and the attacks were fairly equally divided. A nice centre from Dalrymple curled well into the Rangers goal where Speedie luckily cleared, Dickie at the time being hopelessly beaten. On the other hand, strong left wing lay gave Hamilton two good chances, the centre testing McWattie off the first and shooting into the pavilion from the second. The halfbacks were altogether too good for the opposing forwards, and mainly owing to the bursting tactics of the middle line, play was of a very ragged character. After Hamilton had once more failed to control the ball when well placed, the Hearts put in some very strong work, and a series of attacks on the Rangers goal ensued. Twice Dickie saved and a shot going straight through was blocked by an unwitting defending leg, while both Walker and Baird missed from 12 yards range. At the interval neither team had scored. On resuming the Hearts who now had the wind against them, led off with nice open forward play. They were aided by decidedly weak clearances on the part of the defence, and so many chances came their way that it would have been no surprise had they scored at least twice. Baird was the chief sinner, but he was very little worse than the others. One grand centre from Key passed right across the goalmouth, while Porteous and Hunter each waited on the other netting the ball. It was some time ere the Rangers got going, but when they did start they immediately got two beautiful openings, Hamilton with an open goal allowed McWattie to divert, his shot past the post, while MacDonald got near enough to take the paint off the upright. J Walker suffered badly in a scrimmage, and latterly he retired. With but ten men against them, the Hearts naturally had the pull, but although little fault could be found with their outfield play their finishing was wretched. Towards the close a rush put Dickie and the ball over the line, but the point being disallowed for Porteous pushing the goalkeeper, the game ended in a draw – no scoring, it was a fast but by no means good game. The Hearts once they discarded elaboration, were the superior side and on the days play they should have won easily. Their shooting however – and the same remark applies to the fewer attempts of the Rangers – was execrable. Thomson, Drummond, Orr, Key, Buick, Robertson, R and J Walker were the best of the players. Gate £700, stands etc £100. At the meeting in the evening it was announced that the admission for the replay at Celtic Park on Saturday had been reduced to 6d. In the event of another draw 30 minutes extra will be played
