Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox Park last night before about 5000 spectators. Rangers won the toss, and Thomson kicked off before a fair breeze. After some aggressive work by the Hearts right wing, Drummond cleared his lines, and Low and Miller got possession, but carrying on the short passing game to long they were beaten, and their opponenets by strong bustling work were frequently dangerous. This had the effect of infusing some life into the home team, and for a time they more than held their own, Rennie being frequently called on to save. The Rangers’ half’s were not in anything like form, and gave the opposing forwards too much scope, but Drummond and Crawford were always alert, and averted disaster. Miller and Low had a clever run, and the ball being centred at the right moment, Hamilton had little difficulty in scoring. Halt-time score: Rangers one goal; Hearts nil. No time was lost in restarting, and the visitors at once attacked Dickie’s goal, but for tripping Miller a foul was given against them, and play was transferred, and Rennie was almost beaten for a second time. Livingstone and Robertson were working their way along the left when Gibson pushed the former, and foul was awarded. Hogg placed the ball well, and Dickie, showing some uncertainty in his attempt to save, sent the ball into the net. With the score even the game became more attractive, both sides striving hard for the lead, and the play generally improving all over. The Hearts, always on the alert, got away with a rush, and Livingstone scored a second goal for his team. Instead of this reverse improving the play of the Rangers, it appeared to have the opposite effect. Not one of the forwards played anything like their best, some of them tiring palpably. A Smith was being left idle, as the bulk of the work was sent to the right pair, who were seemingly not too anxious to tackle it. Miller in particular, was much blamed for his lackadaisical indifference, but he made up for it shortly with a magnificent effort, which brought about the equaliser. Up to the end the game was well contested. Result; A draw – two goals each.
