Match Trivia
It was a bright, breezy game at Ibrox, and one in which the interest never lagged. This was due to the forceful work of the Rangers’ forwards and the stubborn defence of the Hearts’ rear line. For half-ah-hour the ‘Light Blues’ kept plugging away at Black’s goal, but never a ball could get home until Cairns went through and slipped to Gordon, who slewed round an opponent and drove the ball into the net. The second half was well advance ere the Sergeant made the points secure by another fine goal, so that as leader of the attack he did excellent service. In the conditions the play off the Rangers’ forwards was really wonderful. That their crop of goals wasn’t bigger was due to the brilliant custodianship of Black. He was well supported by his backs, who stuck out a gruelling afternoon with commendable tenacity. The half-backs had a lot to do in checking the opposing attack, with the result that their own forwards got little attention, the left-wingers being more fortunate in this respect by having Ross behind. Lochhead worked hard and effectively – in a defensive sense. Of the forwards, Sinclair, Wilson and Dawson were perhaps best, although that is not sating a great deal. It was evident, however, that given good support, the centre would have been dangerous. It would be invidious almost to single out any player in the Rangers’ attack, although I might suggest to McDiarmid to get the ball over a bit more quickly. Archibald is improving in that respect, although still possessing a tendency to double back too often. The half-backs were not harasses; Manderson and Blair accomplished their little but with ease; and Hempsey had only to exert himself on one occasion. In saving from Gibson early in the second half he accomplished a good piece of work, and injured himself in the process
