Match Trivia

Hamilton academicals didn’t walk into Ibrox and say, “Well, what about it? You’ve won the flag. So, what does anything matter?” Ao, the Academicals went bang out for the points, and with just a shade more adroitness in turning a real good chance to account, they might have had one, if not two. Rangers played all out because they had to. They had longer spells of aggression than the Academicals, but they found scoring difficult, not so much because of Morgan, who was quite good, but because Hill and his backs took up position quickly. This makes 20 League games played by the rangers without loss, and you can add the Cup-ties if you like. After all, the Academicals did have an incentive to go out and beat a team with such a record. They looked to have completely missed the place when Nicholson put Rangers ahead with a clipper shot four minutes after the start, but Benzie squared the account three minutes later when he headed home following a nicely-placed corner by Reid. Venters, with a stinging right-foot shot, restored Rangers’ lead in half-an-hour, but before that Wilson was give two glorious chances to put the Academicals ahead. Then, just to show that they were still chasing points, King equalised five minutes after the change of ends. Jenkins could do no more than touch the ball as it went tearing into the net. Rangers had to become really serious, but it was not until Smith took the bit between his teeth and bustled through by himself to score that the champions were on top for the third time. And the Academicals were not taking the count even then. In one of their forward raids, which opened up the home defence, Gray seemed to elbow the ball, but he claim for a penalty went unheeded. The academicals’ defence had been giving a lot of free-kicks away, and once, also what seemed a penalty. In the last minute, Meiklejohn took one some yards outside the penalty area and drove the ball into Morgan’s right-hand corner of the net
