Rangers inspired by an early goal, played with a confidence and purpose that proved too much for Hamilton Academicals and won just as they please. The visitors never recovered from their early disaster, being wobbly in defence and seldom seen in attack. Rangers played soundly all round, while only Morgan, Thomson and Cox passed muster in a poor Academicals side. A sensational start was witnessed, Rangers scoring a few seconds after the opening. Venters picked up a pass from Smith and shot. The ball seemed to be going well clear of the goal, but Scott, running in, diverted it through his own goal. A spell on uneventful play followed, with both teams attacking in turn, but never dangerously. The visitors were finding the strong breeze of little benefit. Rangers attacked in the centre, and a peach of a pass from Venters put Snith clear through. Morgan came out, and the Ibrox leader lobbed the ball over the keepers head for what appeared to be a certain goal, but Wallace got back in time to clear with an overhead kick right on the goal-line. The Academicals were showing little thrust in attack and never once was Dawson in trouble, although Harrison on one occasion went very close with a fine drive. Rangers always looked more dangerous, and Main and then Smith caused Morgan to handle. Dawson had to clear a well-placed King corner-kick, and Cox tried his luck with a long-range effort which Dawson fielded safely. The Academicals forwards were playing must too closely, and certainly not shooting enough. Harrison was given one fine chance for the equaliser, but his delayed shot was blocked by Simpson. Ten minutes before the interval, McPhail scored a second goal for Rangers from a penalty-kick. Just previous to this the Light Blues had what I thought a justifiable claim for a penalty-kick turned down. Close on half-time, Dawson saved brilliantly from McNee the only real save he had been called upon to accomplish. With eleven minutes of the second half gone, Smith scored a third goal for Rangers, heading through a perfectly placed cross from Kinnear. Rangers now applied the screw and Morgan distinguished himself by saving in grand style from McPhail. In another minute, however, the Light Blues were another goal to the good, Simpson completely beating Morgan with a 30-yard drive. It was all Rangers now, and Smith tingled Morgans fingers with a fast shot, while shorty afterwards a grand try by Brown got an upright. Main followed by shooting against Morgan from two yards range when Kinnear centred beautifully. After that Rangers seemed content, and slackened off, while their opponents never looked like scoring.
