Match Trivia
Even with three of their second string playing, the Rangers were a cut above Hamilton Academicals. The visitors might have made a better fight but for the loss of an early goal. Henderson, within five minutes, whipped one past Sommerville. Three of the four goals were scored by Henderson. He got the second 14 minutes after the first. The play up to the interval ran nearly all the one way, but twice chances came to the Academicals’ forwards, but Robb saved from McIlwraith and McMillan. Fourteen minutes of the second half had gone when Lawson ran through and, when close to goal, gave the ball to Henderson, who scored just as he liked. Then Archibald gave us some samples of his sprinting ability. He repeatedly took the passes from Cunningham and Johnstone and careered right up to the penalty area. From one of the Fifer’s run the fourth goal accrued. He finished by tipping the ball in front of goal and Hunter, to prevent it reaching Henderson or Cunningham, tried to divert it over the line for a corner kick, but put it into the net instead. Before the finish Collins had a couple of fine attempts to bore through and Miller also had a try, but Robb was not giving anything away. All three Rangers’ reserves did splendidly, and the others were quite comfortable. The Academicals were made to look a poorer team than they are simply because they could not get up the necessary speed.
