Match Trivia
Mark up April 21, 1939, as the day Tommy Gilmour accepted his biggest chance with two open hands. Playing his first game for Rangers last night, the former Raith forward staked an almost indisputable claim. After all that weaving and perfect passing and hard hitting, I fancy it will be quite impossible to keep Gilmour out of any future Rangers team. Thats the way I saw it. And thats what six or seven thousand Rangers fans were saying as they moved out. It was one of the greatest first-time performances I have seen. I liked Rangers especially that rhythmic, sweet-passing forward line Gilmour and Waddell formed the liveliest wing on the field, and Symon and Little were always in the game with some real soccer. Hamilton always had a chance, and that was because Devine on the right, found a way past McKillop and kept going that was right to the end. Devine was easily one of Hamiltons best men and Lowe, the centre half, just as easily another of them. Rangers goal in 15 minutes was absolutely merited. It was one of the best this stadium has seen. Scott Symon started it with a beautiful lob. Waddell had been using the old Parkhead Delaney trick of roaming into the centre-forward position. He was there when Symon landed the ball on his toes and Waddells shot from 18 yards was perfect. It became really exciting after that. Hamilton went up biffing and banging. They got the equaliser in 31 minutes and justice was done for Accies had been working for it. Jarvie had a cracker of a shot. The ball rebounded off a post and Drage was there to out it home. Thrills and more of them. One minute later Rangers went on the lead again. Alec Venters. But a pat please for Gilmour, who arranged the corner kick, from which Waddell sent the ball into the goal area. Thornton headed the ball on to Venters and the wee Fifer in turn put his head there and it was a goal. It was a rollicking game after the interval too, With Hamilton jabbing occasionally through their wingers and Rangers playing football that would still have been first rate even if it had been Saturday stuff. There was only ten minutes to go when Venters took up a cross from Gilmour and shot magnificently past Morgan. Two minutes after that Woodburn, attempting to clear, smashed the ball to Davie Wilson, and it rebounded from the centre well past Jerry Dawson.
