Match Trivia

The team from the ducal town made much better appearance at Ibrox Park than the score would indicate. It was unfortunate for them that Waugh should have racked his back right off at the start of the game. While the clever Hamilton inside right remained on the field during the whole game, it was under difficulty, and he could do but little. Hunter was pivot of the Rangers’ attack, and he demonstrated pretty clearly that this is his true position. He had a regular field day, scoring all five goals gained by his side – two from penalty kicks and two from brilliant individual dashes through the defence. Hogg was in fine fettle again on the extreme right, and with Hunter, shared the honours forward. He received frequent ovations for sparkling runs, and twice he was only kept from getting through by being tripped inside the penalty area, goals resulting from the kick awarded in each case. Bennett operated at outside left with fair success. He did not produce the standard of play one expects from him, but seemed to be playing well within himself, and taking no risks. Millar his partner, did passably. Gilchrist’s only failing was an inclination to hang too long on the ball at times, but he showed plenty of dash and elusive work, and in conjunction with Hogg, made up a very strong wing. The Ibrox middle line, in which John May made a welcome reappearance, all played well, Gordon being most prominent alike for smart tackling and dashing co=operation with the attack. Law and McKenzie were safe at back, the latter being in especially bright form, and it was regrettable that about twenty minutes from the close he had to be assisted to the pavilion having sustained nasty knock on the leg below the knee. The fact that Lock got the opportunity of giving a fine exhibition of goalkeeping goes to show that the visitors were not without their fair share of the game. In fact, Lock had more to do than Mason, and in the course of a good deal of vigilant steady work be brought off some saves of the brilliant order. Considering that Waugh – who exchanged places with Main after the interval – was of little use, it says a good deal for the other Hamilton forwards that Lock was kept so busy. Moran was about the best of the line, the little ex-Celt being full of trickery and putting in some very smart runs and centres. Atkinson and Freeman also wrought very hard and effectively, and Main, both as outside left and as support to Moran did himself much credit. The Academical defence, although beaten five times was by no-means weak. Brownlie was slightly the better back. The middle trio, especially in the closing period, placed to and backed up the forwards in excellent style. The Rangers led by 3-0 at the interval. For past of the second half they had only nine men afield, Hunter and McKenzie being off. The former was able to resume all right, and add to his score. Main cleverly scored the losers’ solitary goal when the Rangers’ total stood at 4. Freeman netted the ball also, but was given off-side
