Match Trivia
This tie came off at Kinning Park in showery weather, which had a very marked effect on the attendance, and ended in favour of the Rangers by the heavy score of nine goals to one – the Rangers scoring five in the first and four in the second round; while the young team obtained their only point in the first half. The Athletic won the toss and had the wind in their favour during the first half. The home team kicked off, and from the manner in which the Govan youths returned the ball, and their right wing forwards started a smart run up to the Kinning Park clubs goal, it looked as if the Rangers would need all their ability to win the game. For about a quarter of an hour no scoring took place on either side, but by and by the Rangers began to gain the mastery by their scientific play, and after a carefully planned attack by the forwards the first goal fell to the home team out of a scrimmage. On facing each other again the Athletics made some headway up to the Rangers line, but McIntyre was too good for their forwards, and soon sent the ball spinning down again when a second goal was taken by Gray. By and by a third followed from the foot of one of the Gow’s, and before end changed other two were registered for the home team – one of them slipped by one of the strangers’ backs in attempting to defend his goal. Not long before ends were changed however, the Govanites gave the spectators a taste of their ability by making a plucky run down on the Rangers goal and a smart shot from the foot of Barclay caused the ball to glide past Chalmers. On the change of ends the Rangers had the breeze in their favour, and did pretty much as they liked. The Athletic forwards made several gallant attempts to get through the Rangers back defence, but they were again and again repulsed. The home eleven’s forwards were also in good fettle for such an early period of the season, and innumerable runs were made up to the very mouth of the Athletic goal, where no fewer then other four shots including a ‘beauty’ from Peacock took effect and when the whistle sounded the Rangers had won by nine goals to one. For the winners Cameron and McIntyre were in brilliant form at back, and Buchanan, Gray, Pringle and Peacock were the pick of the forwards.
