Match Trivia

It was a happy idea that brought about the match at Ibrox Park yesterday, and it was attended by just as happy result – except, perhaps, the score, which did not trouble the Highlands much. £236 was drawn, and this, through the generosity of the Rangers club will be devoted to the Red Cross and the Glasgow Highlanders’ Benevolent Fund. Members of the regiment paid for admission at their own request. Although the game had a one-side result, it was thoroughly enjoyed, because the Highlanders, though to a certain extent outclassed, showed undoubted ability. In serious contest this was only the second time the men had played together. Nevertheless, the combination was excellent, and we should not care to say that they would not beat more than one of the League teams. Certainly the Army side that excels them will have to be one of exceptional merit. The Highlanders don’t expect, and don’t want to meet Rangers team in every match they play. Corporal Angus VC got an ovation when he came out of the pavilion to kick off. He appears to be improving in heath every day. In the first minute Paterson ran down and scored for Rangers with a shot which goalkeeper Watson could not reach. In no way discouraged, the Highlanders responded with great dash. Some of their forward play was extremely smart, and it was no more than they deserved when McCandless equalised. McTurk, in the Rangers’ goal had had to save a few difficult shots just previously. For a time after this play went on fast, keen lines until Cunningham shot a nice second goal for Rangers after a run with Bennett. The power to finish was, in fact, one of the chief features of the Rangers’ play; and this was again exemplified when Lister took up a pass from Cairns and scored a third. Leading by 3-1 at the interval, Rangers were soon another goal to the good on resuming. Gordon had it. The Highlanders put on some pressure and frequently had the Rangers defence in difficulties. Then unfortunately the Highlanders lost their goalkeeper, Watson, who was hurt in a collision while protecting his goal. A deputy was sent out, but the soldiers’ bad luck was not ended, for centre-forward Dickson was next injured on the left knee and had to go off. A fifth and sixth goal were scored by Lister, the deputy custodian having no chance with either. At that the scoring finished. In a Rangers team that was not overtaxed, McKenna of Ashfield, made an excellent impression at left half-back; while Lister, at centre, showed a full conception of a pivots duties. Craig seemed in the best of fettle, and I should not be surprised if he came into the team soon. Bennett exhibited much of the old strength in running, which he had temporarily lost. McCandless, at outside left, was always prominent in the Highlanders’ forward movements. Barbour, at inside right, showed much of his old cleverness; and Dickson, at centre, distributed the play indecorously. A certain weakness at half-back threw a weight on the defence that was too great to be borne; yet Lennon and Davie and Watson were quite good. Mr JM Dickson, as referee, seemed to get some pleasure out of the play
