Match Trivia

Despite the tonic of an early goal, Rangers were neither comfortable nor convincing against Falkirk at Ibrox, and if Puddefoot had scored from the interval I am certain the champions would have been hard pressed to avoid the loss of a point. Rangers scored through Henderson (2) and Archibald, while Falkirk’s goal was scored by Townsley just on half-time. The strength and resource of the Ibrox middle men of whom Craig was foremost, had a big influence on the issue, but the real deciding factors were the craft of their left wing and the dash and opportunism of Henderson. Rangers were glaringly weak ar back, but fortunately for them they were up against an attack which was incapable of exploiting their shortcomings. Falkirk’s forwards gave glimpse of clever football but could not translate their footwork into goals. Hunter, whose dribbling was delightful, sacrificed the practical for the spectacular, and his side suffered. Puddefoot, who was again chipped by unsportsmanlike partisans in the crowd, did little of note except a brilliant drive which got the crossbar. Bryce, taking the rebound, laid out Meiklejohn with a terrific drive. That ball looked like finding the net when Davie got his head to it. This was Falkirk’s period, and it must be allowed that fortune did not smile on them. Falkirk’s forwards were as punchless as the Ibrox defence were panicky, and so the Rangers scraped through. Henderson was refreshingly virile, and his headed goal four minutes after the start, which was facilitated by an error of judgment on the part of Ferguson, was a thing of beauty. I should like to say that Chalmers had come to stay in the Rangers’ attack, but his future lies not in my pen. Suffice it that he showed himself worthy of a place in the League eleven. His footwork was clen and deft, and he sent Morton away on many a dangerous mission, while Henderson was also indebted to him for some very fine balls. Morton played well until towards the close, when he wasted several opportunities. Puddefoot missed an 38th minute penalty
