Match Trivia

After a rollicking game at Ibrox Park last night, Rangers somewhat easily beat Everton by 4 to 0. There were fully 20,000 spectators present, although the weather conditions were in no sense congenial, heavy rain falling during most of the evening. Rangers were the superior team, and only ineffective play in front of goal prevented them from finishing the first half more than one goal up. The forwards, playing fine open football frequently had the English defence guessing. Ten minutes after the start Donnachie, whose play impressed, sent over a beautiful ball. Archibald, gathering it nicely cut in cleverly, and found little difficulty in beating Mitchell with a low oblique shot. A knee injury compelled J Page to retire when the game was only five minutes old, and immediately following ‘Archie’s’ goal his place was taken by Thomson, an Everton regular. At the other end the Goodison forwards found the Ibrox backs too strong for them. On one occasion, however. Jeffries only missed scoring by a few inches. Archibald scored a great goal five minutes after the interval. Receiving a good ball from Reid he outpaced Robinson and Peacock, and travelled close in before letting go. Fifteen minutes later, continued pressure by the Rangers’ forwards, whose play was very clever now, culminated in Pursell scoring, and the right half-back counted again just before the finish. His last shot, which got the net high up in the corner, travelled fully thirty yards. Everton’s defence stood up gallantly to an almost incessant onslaught, which was more severe in the second half. Bowie and Cunningham were the stars in a brilliant Ibrox attack. Willie Reid compared favourably with his comrades, but was too well watched to do any damage in the scoring line.
