Match Trivia
Pantomime, it is said, is on the wane – I don’t believe it! The charity students’ burlesque before the start and during the interval at Ibrox was no greater farce than that enacted on the field of play. One redeeming feature was the superlative display of McPhail and Morton. The opposition certainly allowed them to enjoy themselves. JR Johnstone may have had a day of back-bending, yet he proved himself a grand if perhaps unorthodox goalkeeper. JP Murphy and JJ Mulholland were overawed, and I am sure they are still wondering how it all happened. P Valery, an elusive lad with a fine understanding of the duties of a winger, was the most successful City forward, although Strachan is due a word of praise for the way he scored his goal. It took only five minutes for the avalanche to start sliding. Fleming first of all smashed the ball past the bewildered Johnstone, then two minutes later Craig did the trick again, and again McPhail notched a third. Craig converted a penalty conceded by Mulholland. The fin did not end there for before the interval, Fleming (2) and Morton had brought the total to eight. The second half, as can be expected, was pretty much a repetition of the first, only the holders showed no eagerness to rub the salt into City wounds. Still, they could not keep the ball from entering the net on three more occasions, Morton, Cunningham and Archibald being the marksmen. Just to show what they could do if given the chance, the City forwards swept down on T Hamilton, and with the Ibrox defenders taking things easily, Strachan nipped in and knocked one off the deficit with a couple of minutes still to go. Yes, it was a pantomime
