Match Trivia
Yes, and these two Dunfermline goals were the first of the eight. Rangers had a terribly bad first half hour. They were all agley then, whereas the Fifers were right on their toes, and going like winners. Rangers faults contributed to the goals scored by Dobson and McGowan in the first fifteen minutes, and though McPhail reduced the deficit six minutes later, the Fifers were right on top afterwards until five minutes from the interval, when Venters equalised. That put Rangers right, and four minutes later McPhail headed a third goal. It was a marvellous transformation and it seemed to knock the bottom out of the Dunfermline team. At anyrate, they faded out in the second half almost completely, and lost three more goals inside of six minutes the first 16 minutes after the restart to Gillick, Then Gillick again, and next Main. Leggat was unfortunate with more than one of the goals, but he made some splendid saves. There was not a weakling in the Dunfermline team in the first half when Bolt, Dobson and Syme staged some first-class football, but in the second half, it was all, or nearly all Rangers. By that time, the young ones had got a grip of themselves, and the auld yins were able to leave them to play their own game without having to worry. People expect Rangers to do miracles, and this was nearly one, if you like. I liked McKillop, even if he erred when the goals were lost, and both Winning and Kinning pulled their weight. But I will say that Rangers needed Meiklejohn, Venters and McPhail for this job of work
