Match Trivia
Apart from the bog score, the feature in rangers victory over Dunfermline were the displays given by Macaulay and Gillick. Macaulay, we know as a young footballer of remarkable attributed. Yesterday he played with the coolness of a veteran, showing amazing ball control in dribbling runs, yet always on the lookout for a shot or for a colleague ready for a pass. Centre-forward Gillick, on this showing is a better outside right then an outside left. He was wonderful in the way he picked up a pass and carried on, and even more wonderful in the accuracy, with which he got the ball into the middle of the field. Four of the goals came from his passes, and as he scored one himself, it will be seen that he played a big part in his sides victory. To single out these two is not to say that the other Rangers did not deserve a big share of credit. All played well, as a matter of fact, and Smith, who got four goals, is worth a special word of commendation for his alertness in seizing his chances. Dunfermline were simple outplayed. Some of the Rangers passing was classic, and goals seemed the inevitable outcome of their movements. Steele took as much credit out of the game as anyone, in spite of the eight goals he lost. He had many grand saves. The Other defenders stuck pluckily to their tremendous task, and the forwards could raise a gallop occasionally, but they were up against it all the time. Macaulay swept in a long shot for the first goal, Meiklejohn dashed in at close range for the second, and Smith nodded the third home with his head. All these balls came from Gillicks accurate passes. Then Crawford was unlucky enough to put the ball in his own net via the post, and a penalty goal, netted by Warden completed the first half. Smith came away with three in a row in the second half. the first of these was the outcome of a remarkable lob by Gillick, which cleared Steels reach and came back off the foot of the post. To crown a great afternoon, Gillick whacked home the eighth from a narrow angle
