Match Trivia

There were two kinds of fireworks displays served up at Ibrox on Saturday. That given by Messrs Pain before the start of play and at the interval was of the kind that must have satisfied all present. But the play’s the thing to bring the excitement on, and it is a long time since so many goals were scored at Ibrox Park. When these big scores do occur the Rangers usually figure as the predominating partner, but on this occasion they had to call ‘quits’ with their friends and rivals from Dundee. There would be close on forty thousand present, and right from the start they got pretty to enthuse over. Opening play was of the ‘feeling’ nature, Rangers’ right wing pair, Hogg and Montgomery, setting up a nice combination, with the result that Lyall early got the chance of showing his sterling qualities as a keeper. Reid was out for goals, and with a snap shot fairly tested the tall mans between the posts, whose length enabled him to turn the ball round the upright. It was quite evident that David Hamilton, the ex-Celt, was anxious to show his best form on a pitch which he has played many a fine game. He was capitally fed by RC Hamilton, whose long passes out to him were just the kind to suit the little winger, and if he showed a propensity for lofting the ball goal-wards when a low ground pass would have paid better, he nevertheless demonstrated that he is quite as good as ever. Gordon as usual, was the prime initiator in any of the Rangers’ dangerous movements, and it was from a pass of his that Hogg snicked up, sprinted down the wing, shot with force direct to Lyall who ‘downed’ the ball, but could not stop its progress over the goal line. Thus the Rangers scored first, and as often as they scored Dundee did likewise in the ‘follow the lead’ order, RC Hamilton netting close in. Tricky play by Montgomery who ‘cutely passed ahead to Reid, was the means of Rangers again getting on the lead, the famous centre driving from forty yards out, the ball entering the net at express speed well out of the reach of Lyall. Rangers kept up a stiff pressure for a long time, but following some play on the Dundee’s left, the ball came back to Neal, who completely deceived Lock with a high shot, and so the teams crossed over on level terms. For the first five minutes after the resumption Dundee played briskly, but gradually the Rangers came more into the game, and Hogg might have scored on one occasion when nicely placed, but he took too long to get in his final kick, Lawson running in to tackle him, the ball rebounding off the back for a corner. However, following a clever tin by Brown, Reid scored his team’s third point, and thereafter the home team looked like capturing the maximum points, when in attempting to clear a cross shot from Wyllie, Campbell clean missed his kick right on his own goal, and Steven, who was lying in close position to the Rangers’ skipper, promptly took advantage of the slip and cleverly netted. Play was contested more keenly than ever, each team trying their utmost to get on the lead again, but in vain, the whistle sounding full time, and the teams retiring level in goals and points
