Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox before 12,000 spectators. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off with a strong breeze. A grand run by Allan and Clark brought out Dickie’s saving abilities. The ex-Rentonian cleared splendidly while he was being looked after by Willocks and Smith. Again play was transferred to the other end, where the Rangers got a corner. The ball was well placed by Smith, and Hyslop with a fast shot, which gave Hillman no chance, scored the first goal for the Rangers. The Dundee tried hard to get on equality, but they were seldom dangerous. Keillor was passing on well to Smith, but the Dundee had a look in, and Keillor tried a long shot, which went over the bar. Crawford and Miller, from a neat pass by McCreadie, opened u play, and some interesting lay took place inside the Dundee 25 yards boundary. Burgess relieved, and then Dundee took up the running. They played the Rangers defence for all it was worth. Time after time Delvin and Smith looked like scoring, D Crawford took the ball and laced it right in front of Hillman, who threw out in great style. From a pass by Allan the Dundee might have scored, but Gibson was too smart for the other Dundee forwards. A minute later Willocks missed by inches. Play was remarkably fast, and each side did its level best to score. Another corner for the Rangers was unavailing, but a minute later this was followed by another, which was well placed by Crawford, and Burgess unfortunately headed the ball past Hillman. Halftime result – Two goals for the Rangers. Dundee now had the gale at their backs in the second half. A return by Hamilton right at the start gave Willocks a chance to score for Dundee, but he shot too high and the ball went over. From the goal kick Hyslop, Turnbull and Miller carried play right to the other end, where Hillman had an exciting time of it for a little. The Dundonian saved, however, and kept his charge from further disaster. At the other end a pass by Stormont gave Allan an opportunity, but he shot weakly, and the ball went behind. A grand run by Smith on the Dundee left raised the hopes of the their supporters, but he was successfully held by Gibson. The game was a good one. So far the Rangers were having the best of this half, and Hillman had several times to exert himself to prevent disaster. Play was much in favour of the Rangers, who kept the opposing defence continually on the move. Turnbull twice gave the goalkeeper shots to negotiate, which the custodian managed with an effort. A grand shot by Smith knocked down the net upright. At the other end the Dundee Smith forced a corner off Crawford, but in placing the ball struck the net. The play of the Rangers forwards was the some of football ability, their passing and placing being greatly admired by the spectators. They could not get a chance to score however, as the Dundee defence was always on the move. Hall gave the ball to Clark, who worked his way up to the opposite end, and a miss kick by Drummond gave Devlin a chance, which he placed right into Dickie’s hands. Smith of the Rangers came away, and when on the twelve-yards line he passed, and Crawford popped the ball into the net. Smith scored the first goal for Dundee. The Result was – Rangers 3 goals: Dundee 1 goal.
