Match Trivia

With Meiklejohn and Archibald looking on, Rangers were good enough to wind up a great League season with a deserved victory. McPhail scored in nine minutes, Fleming got a second goal in 35 minutes, and Marshall scored the third when the second half was 35 minutes old. Dundee had spells of promise, but the forwards did not make the best use of their scoring opportunities, especially in the second half, when Lawley and Townrow were playing well together. Although many of the good intentions of the Rangers forwards went wrong, they were the more penetrative company, and Marsh had to save well to keep down the score. He had a couple of sound backs in front of him. Morton had great difficulty in beating Brown in the first half, but the ‘wee man’ got going better after the interval, and when ha and McPhail changed placed, he was all over the place, giving the Dundee defence something new to think about. McPhail came by a nasty injury to his face in the first half, up till which time he was a strong forcing factor. Young McCarthy shaped well in the Dundee half-back line. He was always on the heels of Fleming. In the Rangers mid-line Ireland was an effective spoiler. He got the ball with his head very often, and his strength enabled him to subdue Gibb practically all through. Ireland has seldom done better. Both Gray and Robert Hamilton played well, although the former was probably lucky not to have a penalty given against him in the first half for arming the ball. I liked Townrow, who could beat his man cleverly, beside which he was the most dangerous marksman on the Dundee side, he had no luck when a low fast shot hit the post out of Tom Hamilton’s reach. This Hamilton stalwart was convincing in his clearing. With a little more accuracy in finishing, Dundee would have come out if it much better. They have weight and strength behind, and the forwards ought to come on. Muirhead made quite a useful right-winger. The best thing Marshall did was his goal – it was a real good one
