Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox before 4000 spectators. The Rangers kicked off, but a bad pass by Murray enabled Dundee to get close down, but without result. Owing to the slippery nature of the ground it was with great difficulty that the players could keep their feet, and the game suffered in consequence. The Rangers by some good play on the part of Smith made considerable progress, and the ball being passed forward to forward, Miller shot for goal, but Hillman cleared quickly. A minute later however, Miller eluded Hillman’s vigilance, and opened the scoring for the Rangers, as the result of a fine bit of play by Smith and Hyslop. The home lot continued to have all the best of the game and Hyslop far out, had a grand try, the ball just hitting the side of the net. It was pretty much a one-sided game so far. Dundee being seldom over the centre line and having only one shot for goal. The Rangers were really outplaying their opponents, the forwards led by Smith putting in some grand work when the ground conditions are taken into consideration. Hyslop too, was in the mood for shooting, and sent in some stinging shots, which were stopped by Hillman, who is an invaluable man. After a long spell of defensive work Dundee burst away, and converging in front of goal, it looked as if they would score, but Smith came to the rescue. About 25 minutes of the game had gone when Miller scored the second goal for the Rangers, as the result of some fine passing by Smith and the other forwards. Smith and Glen were playing a grand defensive game for the Rangers, the former especially fairly baffling the opposing forwards. Dundee were no match at all for the Rangers, who kept them continually on the move, and with ordinary luck might have had more goals. Hillman too was saving in his best style despite the treacherous footing. At halftime the Rangers led by 2 goals to nil. Dundee opened the second half in better form, and had some promising runs, but failed to bring off the desired goal. The Rangers soon settled to their work, and gave a clever display, Hillman however baffling their efforts to get the ball through. Dundee had a couple of runs, and tested Dickie twice, Battles having a good shot, but on the whole the play was all in favour of the Rangers, whose forwards play was irresistible. From a corner Miller headed through the third goal for the Rangers, who were fairly out-classing Dundee. Hillman had a lively time of it in goal, and how he managed to clear at times was wonderful. The Dundee forwards were rendered next to useless, the Rangers halfbacks and full backs stopping them almost every time. The Rangers had easily a larger share of the game than the score represents, and had not been for Hillman, who was probably assisted by a little luck at times, Dundee would not have got off so easily. It should be added that Glen played a superb game for the Rangers, his judgment in tackling and his general tactics being feature of the game. Miller rolled through with the ball and scored the fourth for the Rangers near the close. Dundee had some pretty runs, and Dickie had to look active in saving a shot from McVean. From a pass by Gibson Smith scored the fifth goal for the Rangers with a splendidly judged shot. The result was – Rangers 5 goals: Dundee 0 goals.
