Match Trivia

For long has the brilliance of March been recognised. Rarely has it been emphasised to a greater degree than against Rangers last night, particularly in the first half. True, he was beaten three times, but he might have lost double the number and still been praised. In paying him so high a tribute, don’t let it be imagined Dundee were thrown back on the defensive all the time – not by any means. They proved themselves a determined, capable team. Their strength lay at half-back, where Guthrie and Evans were masterly. Gray and Kinnear were the men who reached the peak in an Ibrox side which moved with commendable team sense and confidence. Despite the tenacious and sagacious tackling of the Dundee middlemen, Rangers quickly developed a telling game. Nevertheless, Dawson three times distinguished himself in stopping fierce low shots, two from Kerby and one from Coats, before Kinnear thrilled the crowd. In the twinkling of an eye, he delivered a raging ball which Marsh instinctively stopped. A magnificent manoeuvre by Venters, Smith and Main threw Marsh’s genius into further relief, his anticipation in positioning himself for Smith’s shot being a masterpiece in judgment and alacrity. There was a threat in every Dens Park incursion but somehow or other it did not come to fruition. This was due in no small measure to the vigilance of Dawson and his backs, who invariably found their men in front ready and able to give them all the assistance they required. Nothing finer was seen than Marsh’s save on the line from Smith. How he got at the ball as it was turned away from him was difficult to realise. In 30 minutes, Rangers struck. It was a typical McPhail goal. The Dens Park backs seemed hesitant and as the ball was sent over by Main, McPhail baffled his man and crashed an unsaveable shot past Marsh, who, a moment later, executed a wonder save from Smith. With 14 minutes of the second half gone Smith recorded as perfect a goal as we are likely to see all season. As Main swept the ball past Richards, Smith went tearing after it. Marsh came out as Rennie dashed across. Smith did not hesitate a moment. Just inside the penalty area he let go. Crack! Quicker than the eye could follow the ball flashed to the net with terrific force. A glorious goal. A curious incident held up play. With the ball 20 yards from them, Cheyne and Latimer collided and fell prostrate to the ground. The winger quickly recovered but the back had to be led to the pavilion. Cheyne returned after being off ten minutes. Rangers’ third goal arrived a few minutes before the end. A Venters cross was adroitly headed home by Smith, virtually out of Marsh’s hands.
