Match Trivia

Eight minutes from the end at Ibrox, Rangers were a goal down and seemed quite incapable of saving a point. Then they made a dying rally, and not only equalised, but nearly won a game which at no rime previously did they look like pulling off. The fact is the champions were sluggish. They hung in the wind, as the yachtsman would say, and Dundee seemed to sense exactly what was required to keep them from getting their sails full. Somehow, too the Rangers’ forwards did not keep their feet nearly so well as the other fellows. The pitch up the middle was soft and slippy, and at many vital moments – the players went sprawling. But it was finely contested match, and the teams never forgot to deal with each other in a true sporting way, Dundee would not have been lucky to win, yet after Rangers had drawn level, anything might have happened to the visitors who by that time were feeling the effects of the strenuous effort made to keep hold of their lead. The Dundonian goal was very smartly scored by Halliday after twenty minutes. Rangers had been attacking when the ball was sent well up. Halliday got hold of it well to the right and getting nicely past Muirhead he deceived Manderson by appearing to stop to shoot, and then ran in past the backs to beat Robb. For a time after this, Dundee were on top, but nearing the interval the home forwards made a big effort. Henderson tore into the penalty space with the ball at his feet and was there brought down. The penalty kick was entrusted to Archibald, whose shot was saved by Fotheringham. Dundee deserved their half-time lead, and just to show that there was no fluke about it they settled down to what seemed a winning game in the second half. Twice Robb’s goal had a hair-breath escape. On e of his saves from Halliday, a regular stormy petrel, was very fine. Rangers’ forwards tried and tried again to get some sort of cohesion into their attack, but they played too much through the centre, and the Dundee half-backs had a merry time. It looked all over when by dint of sheer determination, the equalising goal was secured. Eight minutes from the end Morton placed a corner kick, and Craig crashed the ball past Fotheringham. Then fireworks, Craig almost notched a winner with a shot that hit the post, but the Dundee defence stood firm after that, and a punishing duel ended even. All the Dundee team did well, with chief honours going to their half-backs and to Halliday. Young O’Neil, who was a Rosyth junior improved as the game went on. Craig was as good as any forward the Rangers had, but as I have said, too much was asked of Henderson. Muirhead was the best of the half-backs. The backs were only moderate and Robb splendid.
