Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, before 5000 spectators, the Rangers won the toss, and J Miller kicked off for Dumbarton. Fortunately the rain had almost abated, but a very high wind prevailed, and the Rangers had this advantage in their favour during the first half. The Rangers were first dangerous and A McCreadie early raised the enthusiasm of their supporters by a splendid shot which just missed its mark by inches. Dumbarton were the favourites, and they played a very strong game. The forwards appeared in much better form than their opponents, and were backed up by superior back play. Haddow was early tested, and he was cheered for a brilliant save. The game was only 10 minutes old when Taylor, from a pass by Bell scored the first goal of the match for Dumbarton very cleverly. The success of the visitors against the wind augured well for their ultimate chances. But the ball had scarcely been centred ere the Dumbarton forwards were again on the way towards the Rangers goal, and within a minute Taylor was again instrumental in scoring, to the consternation of the Rangers. This was a brilliant achievement for Dumbarton, but it was succeeded by an equally meritorious effort. The forwards put in some telling work, and after beating down, the halfbacks, the attack was concentrated on the goal itself. Scott and Hodge were clearly overmatched, and the general fusillade ended in the ball going out to Taylor, who promptly took the chance, and added a third goal. No further scoring was accomplished at halftime when the teams crossed. Dumbarton 3: Rangers 0. The second half was more evenly contested and after some capital wing play, Neil Kerr scored a goal for the Rangers ten minutes from the close. The result was – Dumbarton 3 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
