Match Trivia
The first fixture of this season between these clubs was played at Ibrox Park, Govan on Saturday afternoon. The weather, which had been showery in the early part of the day, cleared up before the start, and when the teams took the field there would be about 6000 spectators present. Having loss the toss, Dumbarton kicked off against the slight breeze. Their opening run was productive of a surprise ere the game was a minute old Hartley scored the first goal for Dumbarton from a return by Haddow. This sudden reverse made the home team pull themselves together. They made a raid on McLeod, but owing to indifferent shooting, and the whole defence of McMillan, Smith and McLeod they could not equalise. Barker had a good chance to score, but he was tripped up by McDonald as he put the finishing touch to the ball. The free kick came to nothing. Bell next opened up the game, backed up by McNaught and Hartley he made rapid progress towards Haddow, but Scott stepped in and spoiled his effort. Rangers again pressed, and McLeod had to concede a corner, but nothing came of it. Another run by Bell and McNaught was cleverly stopped by McCreadie. He placed the ball amongst his forwards, who in turn plied McLeod with several shots. The Dumbarton custodian, however was all there, had defied all attempts to score on the part of the Rangers. Again the Dumbarton opened up the game, Thomson and Ferrier being prominent, Marshall had his work to keep those players at bay. Their passing was excellent, but Marshall was equal to the occasion. From one of his returns Bruce, with a swift shot equalised. A couple of free kicks helped the Dumbarton, but they could not get down, as Haddow, McCreadie returned the ball to D McPherson, who spoiled a good thing by shooting wide. The forward play of the Rangers was loose and selfish. They missed several chances by injudicious shooting, while Dumbarton contrary to expectations played a rare game. With the ball in midfield, the whistle sounded, halftime result – A draw, 1 goal each. After the interval, the Rangers had the wind and a strong run to contend with, Bruce kicked off, but miller caught up the ass, and with a strong kick he sent the ball up the field, where Thomson, with a smart shot, put on a second goal for Dumbarton. This point was obtained nearly as quick after the start as was their first goal in the opening period of the game. Without losing heart at this additional reverse the Rangers played up stronger than ever. They could not overcome the defence of either McMillan or Smith. After a long run on the left, Dumbarton got a corner. It was well placed by Bell, but the Rangers backs, Scott headed it out of danger. The Dumbarton were having most of the play, but still the Rangers did not lose heart. Barker lost another chance by bad shooting. Both teams wakened up a bit now. Each end was visited. A splendid shot by Bruce was smartly saved by McLeod at the expense of a corner. Although well placed, the ball was speedily taken out of danger. The Home team were having very ‘hard lines’. They pulled themselves together and Bruce again equalised, this time by a shot right through the goalkeeper’s legs. Both teams strove their utmost to accomplish the winning goal. The Rangers got it, Barker beating McLeod for the third time with a swift shot. This was all the scoring. The game was vigorously contested all through. Dumbarton played the best-combined game by far. In the Rangers ranks there was too much individualise, especially during the opening period of the game. Final result – Rangers 3 goals; Dumbarton 2 goals.
