Match Trivia

The keenest of rivalry always existed between these two clubs, and this without the slightest doubt accounted for the unusually large attendance at Kinning Park. The weather was delightfully fine. Shortly before four o’clock both teams appeared on the field, and punctual to the time of starting, the Dumbarton kicked off with a strong wind in their favour. The ball was quickly returned by Buchanan and Heggie, who wrought well together, but their effort proved unavailing as the Dumbarton forwards were on the alert, and by commendable combined play carried the ball into close proximity of the Rangers goal, and a strong kick by one of the visitors’ forwards put the ball within an ace of notching the first point in their favour. Chalmers however was equal to the emergency and saved one of the closet shaved goals imaginable. Play from this assumed a more definite shape, and the strangers played admirably, the forwards being most energetic in their endeavours to secure the first point. They were ultimately rewarded as one of them shot the ball a few yards from goal, which went through. There was slight dispute regarding this goal on the plea that it was offside, but ultimately it was allowed. From this till within a few minutes of halftime the Rangers played well. McIntyre particularly showed himself to some advantage. Play was continued for a considerable time to the quarters of the Dumbarton, and in spite of the many rebuffs by McAulay, the persistent efforts of Heggie and Peacock in due time were rewarded as a magnificent kick from Peacock sent the ball between the uprights of the visitors. This acted as an incentive to both teams, and each put forward their best energies to add the their respective scorers, but when haft-time was called the result remained unchanged, one goal each. Having resumed play after half-time, the fact of them both starting on an equal footing had the effect of inspiring each player to do his utmost for the play was decidedly fast and partook of a very fluctuating character, and it was a matter of extreme difficulty to determine which of them had the greater claim of being regarded as superior. During the progress of the play, however a great many corner fell to the lot of the Dumbarton, but of the numerous opportunities thus afforded they were unable to make anything of them owing in great measure to the capital play of the backs. Shortly after one if these scrimmages had been settled the ball was placed out of danger of the Rangers goal, and the halfbacks working well together placed it still further out of danger. Heggie got on the ball, and by a well-directed shot sent it flying between the Dumbarton posts. No further goals were scored, and the result ended as follows- Rangers two goals: Dumbarton one goal.
