Match Trivia
Dont read that result as indicating two well-matched teams. Take it, rather as a tribute to a gallant Dumbarton defence, and an indictment on the feeble and finicky footering of Rangers attack. Certainly, a measure of equality existed up to half-time, but the second period was fought out almost exclusively in the visitors half. Had Dumbartons attack been half as effective as their defence, Rangers might have been toppled from their pedestal. With Mills completely out of the picture, Milne on his Hampden form of last April, Getty fast in the grip of Gray, the Sons forwards seldom troubled Dawson. Gray made one slip, missing the skidding ball, to allow Getty a clear field. From the wingers accurate low cross, Murray took the cipher out of Rangers goal against column with a well placed, angular drive. Two glaring misses by McNee, two more from Smith, and some great keeping by Yuille kept Dumbarton on the lead till Thornton and Smith changed places midway through the second half. Immediately the youngsters nippiness brought result. He robbed a hesitating Fraser and went right in to place the ball past the onrushing goalie. Five minutes later Venters drove a 20-yard free kick well out of Yuilles reach. In the home defence a good time was had by all. Thornton was a sheer delight in front. Top notchers for Dumbarton were Yuille, Soutar, Steel, Fraser and Mather
