Match Trivia
Another wet night for League football and a surprisingly big ‘gate’. Almost three thousand people welcomed Dumbarton to Ibrox Park, where, if they did not see a great deal of pretty football in the eighty minutes played, they saw two very earnest teams. Dumbarton started as if they would run the Rangers off their feet. Indeed, but for their miserable finishing, they must have had the points well won before the game was twenty minutes old, even if Brander missed a ‘pinch’ for the Rangers during the same period. Ultimately the Boghead side were rewarded with a goal smartly taken by Richie, who caught up a pass from O’Neil, following a mistake by Bone. In the second half the Rangers brought Branscombe into the centre. The change made for betterment. In less than ten minutes the ex-Partick Thistle forward had equalised the scores, his shot glancing into the net off Hamilton’s fingers. Duncan then slipped one through between the goalkeeper and the near upright, and five minutes afterwards this Ibrox lead was neutralised. In the gathering darkness all I could see was a bunch of players swarming round Lock’s goal, and a second or two later some Dumbarton players shaking hands with their centre-forward. I would say that the draw was quite a good result, for if Dumbarton had the better of the early exchanges the Rangers were top dogs in the second half, in which McCrae missed the chance of a lifetime. How he managed it I do not know. I was not enamoured with either custodian, but I liked full backs Manderson and McGrory. Bone kicked a good ball, but was unfortunate in making the slip that led up to the loss of the Rangers’ first goal. Logan and Riddell were the most noticeable half-backs, and Branscombe and McGregor were the pick of the ten forwards. Brander made a promising first appearance in the Ibrox attack
